Key Stage 4 Art & Design

The GCSE Art and Design course demands a positive attitude and a great deal of commitment from the pupils in our charge. We encourage pupils to be self motivated and build on their technical skills developed in Key Stage 3.

The Edexcel GCSE Art and Design course encourages an adventurous and enquiring approach to the subject. Successful pupils should be able to demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary art and design practice and the integration of theory and understanding to produce a personal response that embraces a range of ideas. The course is geared towards a qualification with endorsements in either Fine Art or Textiles. Pupils are required to submit TWO units of coursework and their response to an externally set assignment.

  • 3. Respond to work from other times and cultures
  • 4. Analyse and evaluate sources
  • 5. Develop and explore ideas and materials
  • 6. Review and refine their ideas
  • 7. Realise their intentions
  • 8. Make connections between their work and work of other artists

Visits to Tate Galleries

Pupils from year 11, 12 and 13 have recently taken part in visits to the Tate Britain and Tate Modern galleries in London.  Both trips provided valuable opportunities for the pupils to develop their contextual understanding of contemporary art and enabled pupils to gather important resources in support of their project work.

Year 9 & 10 two day visit to London

In May a number of year 9 and 10 pupils took part in a two day visit to London, where they undertook research for their school projects.  Pupils responded extremely enthusiastically to their visit to the National Gallery, Tate Modern and Tate Britain where they reacted thoughtfully and diligently to the diverse range of artwork on display.
