Astronaut visits Stanwell

Posted on: Thursday 17th December 2015

We were delighted to receive a visit from Pedro Duque, an astronaut from the European Space Agency. He flew a mission on the Space Shuttle ‘Discovery’ in 1998, and also lived on the International Space Station for 10 days in a more recent mission. He is now one of the flight / mission managers for the ESA control centre. He talked to pupils from Years 10-13, initially showing them a video of highlights of his own mission to the ISS – he provided an incredibly insightful commentary of different aspects of his journey, especially as Tim Peake will have been going through exactly the same stages yesterday! He then held a question and answer session with the pupils for about half an hour, where he answered questions from the floor on a wide range of topics.
