The Big Sleep Review

Stanwell School

Posted on: Friday 10th October 2014

On Wednesday, 20 Film Studies students from the 6th form went to see Bogart and Bacall in Howard Hawks’ The Big Sleep (1946). Penarth Pier Cinema was showing a new version of this classic film noir. The students were suitably impressed by the labyrinthine plot, but mostly by the stellar performances of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The exchanges between them are fast, witty and poetic-not surprising when you think that the film was based on a novel by Raymond Chandler and William Faulkner adapted the screenplay. The final lines of the film remain:

Bacall: You’ve forgotten one thing. Me.

Bogart: What’s wrong with you?

Bacall: Nothing you can’t fix.
