Christmas in the German Department

Christmas is something we take very seriously in the German department! The Germans are a very festive folk and take real pride in their Christmas celebrations.

On alternate years we visit the Christmas markets of Cologne for some festive cheer and to sample the German way of Christmas. This year we visited the next best thing - the Birmingham-Frankfurt Christmas markets which were very authentic.

We also celebrate Nikolaustag on 6th December, where good pupils receive small presents in their shoes. But watch out if you've been bad, as St. Nicholas traditionally leaves coal in the shoes of bad boys and girls!

To reward all our pupils for their hard work we provide them with traditional German Christmas treats such as Stollen (German Christmas cake), Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and Spekulatius (Almond biscuits).

Our assistant, Katharina gave a presentation this year to pupils in KS3 about how Germans celebrate Christmas. We saw all the different types of biscuits that her mum likes to bake at Christmas time (11 different sorts!).
