John Avon: Visiting Artist

Posted on: Tuesday 22nd March 2016

On the March 17th, we were thrilled to welcome world renowned graphic illustrator John Avon, his mother Marion and sister Lydia to our Year 7 assembly.

During the assembly seven pupils presented a stunning powerpoint display highlighting the stages of John’s career as a science fiction/fantasy artist from his beginnings as a pupil at Stanwell School to present day. We were all overwhelmed by the sheer talent contained in his work. By way of thank you to John for donating two of his limited edition books to the school ‘Journeys to Somewhere Else’ pupils gave him a personalised book of their own studies of their work to keep. Well done to all the pupils who produced work for the booklet and to those who presented the assembly: Bethan Daly, James Brindle, Zain Haq, Niamh Rind, Hiba Nadeem, Rebekah Williams and Elsa Clarkson. Here is John’s reaction to the afternoon:

“I am personally very moved by the whole event. I did not quite know what to expect. But WOW. The pupils did so well! Only now have I had time to really take in the book of their work. I am beyond proud.”
