Penarth Pavilion Project
YOUNG people in Penarth are being urged to have their say on the design of the Penarth Pier Pavilion.
Outline plans for renovation of the 80 year old building include the development of a cafe, observatory and multi-purpose community area.
A final design has yet to be agreed and, with architects currently working on details of the scheme, the PACL project team want to hear from youngsters in the town.
Project director Maggie Knight said: "We want the restored Pavilion to be a place for everyone to enjoy - and that includes children and teenagers!
"We want to know if they'll eat in the same cafe as their parents, and what type of food they want.
"Do young people want a space where they can play video games or are they more interested in a theatre or cinema?
"It's important we hear from everyone who will use the building."
To help generate feedback, members of the Pavilion Youth Forum have designed a questionnaire where young Penarthians can have their say on the project.

About
The Pier Pavilion is an iconic landmark on the South Wales coast. We need your help and support to enable it's refurbishment and re-opening to public.
It will become both a focal point for the community as well as a centre of excellence for the environment, maritime and social history, heritage, education and entertainment.
The renovation will be funded from a variety of sources, and a third of the funding is already in place. Funding sources include the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and a grant which we hope to receive from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The finished building will include a restaurant/bar, a visitor and heritage/learning centre, a maritime museum, a function/meeting room, a multi-purpose arena, an observation tower, an auditorium/cinema and a Café.
Please get in touch with your thoughts and ideas, and help support this remarkable project.
The History of Penarth Pier:
Penarth Pier was designed originally by H F Edwards for the Penarth Promenade and Landing Company Ltd. Construction of the cast iron and timber began in 1894 and the pier opened the following year. In 1907 a wooden pavilion was added at the sea end.
When the pier was sold to the Vale of Glamorgan Council it was given a new landing stage and spectacular pavilion, built in the latest material of ferro-concrete, at the shoreward end. The venue became increasingly popular, with regular events including tea dances following the 1929 grand opening.
Two years later a serious fire spread almost the entire length of the pier causing serious damage; the pier was rebuilt (at a cost of £3,157) but the wooden sea-end pavilion was never replaced.
In 1947 there was another reverse when the Canadian ship ‘Port Royal Park' was driven into the pier during a gale. The 7,000 ton vessel caused extensive structural damage and repairs to the pier took two years to complete at a cost of the then considerable sum of £28,000.
The pier was restored again in 1998 and formally re-opened. Despite a history of setbacks the Pavilion Building and its Pier remain an important landmark admired by visitors and loved by residents.
Now we need your help and support to get the Pavilion reopened to the public, and restore this beautiful landmark.
