Anti-Bullying Policy

All children have the right to receive their education in a safe and secure environment, free from humiliation, oppression and abuse. The Governors and staff of Stanwell School are committed to ensuring that children who attend the school will be able to develop fully in a protected, supportive, and caring atmosphere, free from threat of coercion from other members of the school community.

Definition:

Bullying is wilful and conscious action designed to hurt, humiliate, threaten frighten or coerce another person. Such action may be physical or verbal.

Scope:

All pupils and staff at Stanwell School acting as members of the school.

Action:

1. The School will promote a non-violent ethos within the School.

2. The School will ensure that all pupils are aware of their right to a safe and secure environment in which to study.

3. The School will ensure that pupils understand what constitutes bullying.

4. The School will ensure that pupils understand that bullying, be it verbal, physical, by gesture, exclusion, or extortion, will not be tolerated.

5. The School will ensure that pupils and their parents understand the action which should be taken by a pupil who is a victim of bullying.

6. The School will take immediate action in all cases of bullying.

7. The School will act to raise staff awareness of bullying.

Procedures:

1. Through assemblies, primary liaison procedures, School Council, the tutorial programme, school planners, form discussions and the curriculum, pupils are taught that:

a) bullying is, of its nature unacceptable;

b) instance of bullying are regarded as serious breaches of School rules, will be dealt with severely, and may lead to exclusion;

c) pupils need to notify staff of incidents of bullying, and that they have a responsibility in respect of other pupils who are being bullied.

2. Pupils being bullied are encouraged to report the matter immediately. The Year Tutor will take immediate action. The investigation and consultations may include all relevant staff, parents and, where appropriate the Educational Welfare Officer.

3. Parents of pupils who are being bullied should report the matter to their child’s Year Tutor.

4. Pupils who are being bullied will be given individual support, and pupils who are bullies will be counselled supportively as part of the disciplinary procedure.

5. All staff will be given in-service training on the causes, effects, methods of dealing with bullying, both as a group and as individuals.
