AS Level
The AS course has been designed to provide a broad introduction to the scope and nature of Psychology as a science. The emphasis is on applying knowledge and understanding rather than just acquiring knowledge. This enables students to develop transferable skills including analysis, evaluation and critical thinking. The AS course involves two modules covering a range of areas of behaviour as well as introducing the foundation of psychological investigations – research methods.
AQA Psychology A Unit 1 – PSYA1
Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Research Methods
This module involves the study of Memory, Attachment and Research Methods. The Memory topic involves the study of issues like how to improve memory and the accuracy of eyewitness testimony. Attachment considers explanations of attachment and the effects of day care on development. It comprises 50% of the total AS marks, 25% of the total A2 marks and is assessed by an external examination in January of 1 hour 30 minutes. Questions include short answer, stimulus material and one 12-mark question requiring extended writing.
AQA Psychology A Unit 2 – PSYA2
Biological Psychology, Social Psychology and Individual Differences
This module involves the study of Stress, Social Influence and Abnormality. The Stress topic involves the study of the body’s response to stress as well as methods of dealing with stress. Social Influence encompasses conformity and obedience and involves learning about how and why we are influenced by other people including some of the most famous psychological research ever carried out. The Abnormality topic looks at different explanations and treatments for abnormality. It comprises 50% of the total AS marks, 25% of the total A2 marks and is assessed by an external examination in June of 1 hour 30 minutes. Questions include short answer, stimulus material and one or more 12-mark question requiring extended writing.
