Restless Earth Workshop
Posted on: Tuesday 01st March 2016
On Friday 26th February, Year 9 geographers took part in a day of interactive hazard management provided by the British Cartographic Society in association with the Geographical Association. During the day, entitled ‘The Restless Earth’, the pupils mapped and managed the Japanese earthquake and subsequent tsunami using GIS strategies and i-Pad technology. The workshop enabled the pupils to understand how maps are used in real life situations, whilst appreciating the range of cartographic techniques available. The pupils were assigned different disaster recovery roles within their groups – Military, Medical, Search & Rescue, Humanitarian or Co-ordinator – with teamwork, and problem solving skills required for a successful outcome. The winners from the morning session were Samuel Charles, Miller Coyle, Jacob Randall, Max Baker and Reuben Jones, whilst Neil Power, Toby Chinneck, Robert Craven, Zachary McLeman, Joe Ramage and Jacob Adam won the afternoon session. Well done to all involved!
