Biology/Human Biology
The staff within the Biology department all have an enthusiastic approach to the teaching of the subject and are always willing to help students with problems they may encounter in their studies. There are five specialist staff in the department with a wide range of interests and expertise within the subject.
The AS and A Level Biology and Human Biology courses are based on the WJEC examination board specifications and include the following topic headings.
AS Level:
BY1 Basic Biochemistry and Cell Structure
BY2/HB2 Biodiversity and Physiology of Body Systems
BY3 Practical Biology Assessment
A Level:
BY4/HB4 Metabolism, Microbiology and Homeostasis
BY5 Environment, Genetics and Evolution
BY6 Practical Biology Assessment
The units Human Biology units (HB2 and HB4) follow a similar pattern to the Biology units but concentrate on human aspects of the areas contained within each unit.
Chemistry
There are five specialist Chemistry staff within the department who are all fully qualified to teach the Advanced Level course. This provides a wealth of experience and diversity of backgrounds which students are able to draw upon both within and outside the formal framework of their lessons. The AS and A Level Chemistry courses are based on the WJEC specifications and include the following topics:
AS Level:
CH1 Controlling and Using Chemical Change
CH2 Properties, Structure and Bonding
CH3 Practical Chemistry
A Level:
CH4 Spectroscopy and Organic Chemistry
CH5 Physical and Inorganic Chemistry
CH6 Practical Chemistry
Physics
The Physics department prides itself on the approachability of its staff and their enthusiasm for the subject. There are five specialist Physics staff with a wide range of backgrounds including engineering, medicine and academia. The AS and A Level Physics courses are based on the WJEC exam board specification and include the following topics:
AS Level:
PH1 Motion and Energy Change
PH2 Waves and Particles
PH3 Practical Physics
A Level:
PH4 Oscillations and Fields
PH5 Electromagnetism Nuclei and Materials
PH6 Experimental and Synoptic
Applied Science
The Applied Science course is a more vocational option than the traditional Sciences. It can be taken as the only Science subject a student chooses or in conjunction with any of the other Science A levels. It gives a broad Science knowledge base which students can tailor to their individual interests.
The AS and A Level Applied Science courses are based on the WJEC examination board specifications and include the following topic headings.
AS Level:
ASC1 - (External examination) - Health Science
ASC2 - (Coursework Portfolio) - Analysis
ASC3 - (Coursework Portfolio) - Energy and the Environment
A Level:
ASC4 - (Externally marked) - Scientific Investigation
Then any other 2 from:
ASC5 - Applied Forensics
ASC6 - Applied Biology
ASC7 - Applied Energy
ASC8 - Applied Scientific Communication
ASC9 - Working in Applied Science
