Young Reporters International Winners

Two Stanwell School students have gained international recognition for an environmental report entitled ‘Boiling the Planet Away’. All pupils in Year 12, as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification are asked to research an environmental issue of interest to them. The students are expected to apply effective journalistic skills to complete a report of 1000 words maximum. The reports are then entered into the Young Reporters for the Environment competition, an international award supporting young writers passionate about local and global environmental issues. In Wales this competition is organised by Keep Wales Tidy. Sarah Brabham and Alice Holder were awarded first position in the national round and became Welsh winners for the 15-18 written category. Subsequently, as national winners the environmental report was then entered into the international round, where entries from around 29 countries were judged by experienced journalists including Huw Edwards. The results were announced in May and both girls must be congratulated for gaining third place internationally, the only British students to do so.
