On Monday 24th April, Year 9 geographers took part in a day of interactive hazard management provided by the British Cartographic Society. During the day, entitled ‘The Restless Earth’, the pupils mapped and managed the Japanese earthquake and subsequent tsunami using GIS strategies and i-Pad technology. The workshop enabled the pupils to understand how maps are used in real life situations, whilst appreciating the range of cartographic techniques available. The pupils were assigned different disaster recovery roles within their groups – Military, Medical, Search & Rescue, Humanitarian or Co-ordinator – with teamwork, and problem solving skills required for a successful outcome. The winners from the morning session were Ryan Best, Chris Slack, Anton Rogan, Michael Dolbear and Ollie Evans, whilst Nicoll Chishimba, Amelia McClymont, Jasmine Squire, Danny Sullivan, Jac Tucker and Alex Iredale won the afternoon session. Well done to all involved!
